Alex Babczyk, Ph.D.
Alex was born in Cologne, Germany. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the University of Bonn in 2017, where he worked on the characterization of fungal prenyltransferases under the guidance of Prof. Jeroen Dickschat. During his master's studies, he developed an interest in organic synthesis, so he joined the group of Prof. Dirk Menche and worked on the synthesis of an artificial carbasugar. After completing his master's thesis, he remained in the Menche group and began his Ph.D. in fall 2019, developing a synthetic route for the first total synthesis of the macrolide pentamycin. He joined the Moore lab in November 2024 and is interested in toxin biosynthesis in harmful algae species. Outside the lab, he engages in fitness activities, enjoys beach walks, pursues culinary interests, and follows soccer.
